INTRODUCTION

Jürgen Bergbauer’s work, “Häuser” (Houses), originated in the Willinghausen region where the Brother’s Grimm were inspired by desolate farming villages to write their world-renowned fairy-tales in the 19th century. Jürgen Bergbauer uses one of the most villified images from these fairy-tales as the focal point of his work: the often dilapidated timber house of the now modernized farming village, which he believes recalls the Witch’s house in “Hansel and Gretel”. Bergbauer places the selected photos of the timber houses, digitally cropped, on a black background. Suspended in this anonymous space, they magically draw us in, whilst reminding us of the fairy-tales from our childhood. Bergbauer captures his houses with the cliché of this mysticized, mythical architecture in mind. However, it is not only meant to impress upon the viewer an image of a specific region, but rather to serve as an idealized image of a romantic and idyllic Germany.
