INTRODUCTION

Photographer Juho Kuva was born in 1980 in Hong Kong and grew up in Finland where he studied photography. He earned a Masters in Photography in Gothenburg, Sweden. His landscape series is titled “I love them both” – “both” meaning, on the one hand, landscapes void of people, and on the other, his father who always accompanied Kuva on his travels. Whether in his overexposed photographs of nature in half-light or his literally “snow white” landscapes, as he says, the “beauty of images has always been important” to this young artist. For Kuva the elements of light, color, composition – the classical tools of a photographer – are of key importance. Furthermore, Kuva states that his photographs have moved increasingly towards simple photographic tableaux. He meticulously composes the horizon tapering off, the movement of “lines” in the landscape, paying special attention to open and generous spaces that give us room to breathe. His pictures allow us to “hear” visually what he encountered on his journeys. Words to describe these minimalist images that reach deep into space: contemplation and humility in front of nature. And calm.
