INTRODUCTION

The Experiment   Enrique Badulescu is, without exaggeration, a full-blooded photographer – a description he takes seriously. After studying at the renowned Münchner Fotoschule (Munich School of Photography), the temperamental Mexican moved to New York. Magazines such as Italian, French, English, German, and Japanese Vogue send him around the world. His freestyle photos are full of luscious colors and pulsating forms and have depicted people like Neneh Cherry in ways that render them unfamiliar. With a Polaroid camera he spontaneously captures images of obvious subjects, but the finished work goes far beyond that, such as in his “Polaroid Taco,” which he prefers to create in the Caribbean: “I take the Polaroid out, first put it in the sand, then in the saltwater. Then I roll it together like a taco and when I open it up a week later the picture is beautiful!” Always curious and open to experimentation, Badulescu breaks smooth surfaces open, makes pictures and collages in several layers and creates flowing transitions through painting. Handcrafted manipulations and explorations of photochemical reactions belong to his unmistakable style. Still, the light and colors of his homeland always play the largest role, creating a captivating vivaciousness and sensuality that are inspiring.   Petra Prahl
