Descent into Light

The will to add to the ancient genre of landscape depiction one’s own view, is a self-confiding undertaking Olaf Otto Becker has faced. Supported by his precise 8x10cm-Kamera, descending into the clarity of the icelandic nature, Becker chose the night as ideal time for taking pictures. Thus he patiently captured nordic light in long exposures, without giving room to darkness. By seperating light and shadow, banning all shadows from his work, and by taking the notion of “Photo-graphy” literally, Becker does not create naturalistic landscapes, but composes constructions of great puissance, which seem to glow from the depth of the picture. His roots in painting are ostensible. Also time, with its totally different significance in painting, plays a major role in Olaf Otto Beckers work. Sometimes it takes him days and he has to cover great distances to catch a situation already visible in his mind. For his around one hundred pictures celebrating nordic landscapes, he travelled for four years 18.000 kilometers. The results are of an overwhelming, melancholic power. One remains speechless facing this visualized silence.
