INTRODUCTION

Compliance and Resentment Matthew Brannon reaches deep in his bag of graphic design tricks to furnish his word games with a visual counterpoint. The ironic disparity between a grave statement and lighthearted, catchy graphics which are reminiscent of Matisse, reflects Brannon’s position that there is a violent chasm between the pop culture in which we live and our true needs and opinions. He consciously uses the analog method of silk screening to lend his works both the look and feel of a multiple and the aura of a unique piece. Brannon lives and works in New York. The work Compliance and Resentment graces the catalogue cover of the traveling exhibition "Uncertain States of America" which first brought together a diverse group of artistic commentary on America's role in the world at London's Serpentine Gallery in fall 2006.
